Violence Erupts After Drake Concert

E-mail Print PDF

At least two men were killed in at least 11 shootings in the city Saturday.

Raymond Parker, 19, of Maywood, and Harry Johnson, 32, of Lawndale, were killed in separate incidents on the West Side.

A 14-year-old girl was accidentally shot on the South Side by her brother, who was playing with a handgun. She was in good condition.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks outside the downtown House of Blues after a hip-hop show.

That shooting happened just before 4 a.m., as more than 1,000 people were leaving the concert venue at 329 N. Dearborn.

A show by hip-hop acts Drake and Sly Polaroid began at 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The victim was involved in an "altercation" with someone who displayed a handgun, then shot the man and fled, said Chicago Police spokesman John Mirabelli.

The victim, who was not identified, was listed in stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Detectives are investigating the case, and no one was in custody as of Saturday evening, police said.

Hip-hop birthplace gets a break

There was new hope for the tenants of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx Monday when the city nixed a deal to sell the building - the birthplace of hip-hop -- to a real estate developer.

Residents of the 100-units of affordable housing have been living in fear since learning that real-estate mogul Mark Karasick had made an offer on the Morris Heights property where DJ Kool Herc pioneered the art of mixing beats on dual-turntables in the rec room in 1973. The city could not legally listen to the hip-hop historical argument in considering the sale, but the Department of Housing Preservation and Development did look at the finances of the sale.

"We couldn't see a way the rents allowed under Mitchell-Lama could cover the purchase price," said Neill Coleman, a spokesman for HPD.

Tenants currently pay an average of about $1,200 for the 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units, said Dina Levy of the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board. The concern is that the sale would have led to a rent hike to cover Karasick's confidential purchase offer or that he would have flipped the building at an even higher sale price, leading to rent increases. Even if rent stabilization protected tenants, they are concerned that a high priced, low-profit sale could led to cuts in repairs and maintenance, Levy explained.  A woman who answered the phone at Karasick's office said that he would not be commenting on the city's decision. Steven Frankel, attorney for the ownership group, 1520 Sedgwick Houses Inc., said that he had no formal notification from HPD regarding their rejection of the deal and could not comment.

But tenants have not won the war yet. The building's owners have the right to opt out of the Mitchell-Lama program, which offers tax reductions and other incentives in return for providing affordable rent. If taken off the Mitchell-Lama rolls, the building can be sold to the highest bidder without public review. No application to leave the program has been filed yet, Coleman said.

In the meantime, tenants have found allies in Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and two not-for-profit tenant advocacy groups like Levy's as well as Tenants and Neighbors. With their assistance, the residents hope to raise money and use subsidies that will allow them to buy the property and turn it into an affordable co-op building. Levy said their appraisal of the building had come to just over $7 million.

Schumer said the building's struggle was a small part of a greater need to preserve affordable housing around the city.

"At 1520 Sedgwick, we have the glimmer of hope of stemming the tide," he said.

DMX Out of Jail, Still Facing Assault Rap

We're hoping that, wherever he is now, DMX is turning over a new leaf.

The rapper-actor was released from a Phoenix jail Thursday after serving a 90-day sentence for a variety of felonious behavior involving drugs, dogs and identity theft.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was sentenced Jan. 30 after cutting a deal with prosecutors on more than a dozen felony counts racked up over the prior 12 months. He ultimately pleaded guilty to one count each of animal cruelty, theft, marijuana possession and possession of a narcotic.

But having served his time, why did DMX have to pay a $10,000 bond to secure his release today?

The Cradle 2 the Grave star was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault and probation violation while behind bars for allegedly hurling a tray of food at a guard.

"He's extremely happy that he's home," attorney Glenn Allen said. "We look forward to being able to handle his case with him out of custody."

The Maricopa Country's Sherrif's Office said that it's likely DMX will have to return to court to face the music for the alleged tray toss.

Alicia Keys is dating hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz

Alicia Keys is dating hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz, he has confirmed.

There have been rumours for months that the pair were romantically involved and lyrics in his new song with Drake, called Best I Ever Had, certainly imply she has stolen his heart.

They read: “Wake up in the morning and my baby cooked me breakfast. A’s wearing nothing on but a necklace.

“Yeah, she say she wanna treat me like a king; I get big gifts so the money ain’t a damn thing.

“She gave me a party at the Guggenheim… What’s next? The ring? The baby? She really loves me!”

Keys threw Swizz (above) a party for his birthday at the Guggenheim last September, but despite the obvious clue, he has denied the song was about her but admitted they are an item.

“What we have is so precious. We’re nowhere near ready for a baby or a ring,” he told the New York Daily News.

Swizz has only just got divorced from ex-wife, R&B singer Mashonda, who he has a two-year-old son with.

Last year, she reportedly accused Alicia of being a “homewrecker” and claims she was still with her husband when they started dating.

Swizz has denied cheating on his ex and Mashonda has made an application to the courts to settle a maintenance dispute.
